Angie and Lenny have been married for five years. They wanted to experience some excitement and fun before they decided to have children and so they consciously developed a super exciting social life.

The basic issue, it needs to be pointed out, is that practically everything they do socially is associated with drinking. For instance, all of the sporting events, family get-togethers, parties with friends, dinner engagements, and happy hours they spend time at somehow include drinking.

If they were casual drinkers this wouldn't be a big issue. Due to the fact they drink rather heavily, however, they are starting to notice some definite alcohol-related issues in their lives.

As an illustration, just two days ago Lenny was arrested for his first DWI and has been calling off from work due to alcohol-related health problems. Not only this, but Lenny's last two performance assessments at his place of employment have been less than praiseworthy and he has started to forget what he says or does while he drinks. With thoughts of the TV program still imprinted in her mind, Angie asked Lenny if some of the alcoholism signs they have been displaying could mean that they are alcohol dependent or maybe becoming dependent on alcohol. Lenny didn't know the answer to Angie's question and so he suggested that they make an appointment with one of the physicians at the local drug and alcohol treatment center to find out more about the severity of their drinking circumstances.

Ironically, even though their drinking behavior hadn't yet changed, it was evident that Angie and Lenny were at least addressing their drinking problems, they were enthusiastic about finding out more about their drinking circumstances, and they were interested in learning how they could substantially decrease or do away with the alcohol-related issues that had started to escalate.

When Angie and Lenny went to bed that night, they came to a decision that the next morning, Lenny would call and make an appointment for both of them at the substance abuse treatment facility located in the middle of town. After they promised one another that they would do whatever it takes to prevail over the drinking problems that had emerged in their lives, they actually had the most peaceful night's sleep they could remember in the last three months.
