When Lois was in high school, she had acquired a reputation as an individual who hit the books real hard and who rarely, if ever, had fun drinking with her classmates. She seemed single-minded about excelling academically so that she would be able to pursue a career that she not only enjoyed but one that also gave her a degree of security from a financial position.

After Lois graduated from high school, she applied to and was accepted into a well known program in religion. Her rationale for this decision was that this subject area would be good training for law school and would not be similar to the majority of law school applicants who pick political science as their undergraduate major.

Lois was the type of person who worked diligently to reach her objective and then would take a breather when she could. As it turns out, nonetheless, a large number of the things she did between terms or during summer breaks did not have much to do with drinking. Clearly, Lois was anything but a party-person. Now that her final exams for her second year in law school were done and elated with the fact that she had done extremely well on her tests, nonetheless, she felt like celebrating.

So Lois and a few of her friends from school went to a local club where they started to have a few drinks. As the evening advanced, Lois and her classmates continued to drink. In truth, she was having such a fantastic time that she didn't want the night to come to an end.

After drinking about an-hour-and-a-half when Lois started to slur her words, speak in a confused manner, and then become unconscious, however, her buddies instantaneously knew that they needed to call that they needed to call 911, the emergency number, and ask for emergency assistance because they suspected that Lois was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.

Lois was conscious of the fact that she came an inch from losing her life due to an alcohol overdose and, as a consequence, was happy to be alive. At the same time, however, she was somewhat dejected knowing that she had almost passed away the previous night. Her parents realized how intensely she studied at the university and how little she permitted herself to experience a social life. Nonetheless, they also were aware that Lois needed to avoid abusive and excessive drinking.

As a consequence, they recommended that in the future, whenever a drinking opportunity unfolds, that she always drink responsibly. Lois was in agreement with this and assured her friends and her Mother and Father that she would never again drink in a hazardous manner. As stated by Lois, "I never pondered the fact that I would become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local town newspaper. I now grasp the fact that excessive and hazardous drinking is not the best for me. I assert that this will never happen again."

Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also possessed. Stated another way, she rapidly realized that she had made an error in judgment and made up her mind that she would never make the same mistake again. In point of fact, she now realized that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this form of careless and excessive drinking can result in death.
