About three months ago I had breakfast with a forty-five-year-old male named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As mentioned by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship difficulties.

As declared by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical issues that he essentially has no ambition to do much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete five semesters of grad school in criminal justice.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me wonder if he is an example of a person who can address his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something constructive about these difficulties. Or, conversely, if he is an individual who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets addiction rehab that leads to long-term sobriety.

It may be asked how therapy would help his alcohol and drug dependency. For starters, there are more than a few recently created doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to concede the fact that there is absolutely nothing affirmative about drug addiction and abusive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the route to deteriorating health, a premature death, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, poor work and school performance, and legal problems. Fourth, therapy for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him manage these mental health problems more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Because Benjamin lacks the fortitude to achieve much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he badly needs some hope for a better lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the therapy he requires for his mental illness and alcoholism and drug addiction and adhere to his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't realize this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol via drug and alcohol rehab and get the treatment he requires for his acute depression, he can reorient his life and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

Stronger relationships, positive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to obtain the professional treatment he requires, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in a healthy and drug and alcohol-free way, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his life.
