It gets 30 miles per gallon, and saves me loads of cash at the pump. Nonetheless, come the weekend I get in my big block motor Chevy Camaro, like the cars you see on Top Gear, and head out to the drag strip. Sometimes I pretend that my Toyota is one of the cars on Top Gear, and it's pretty thrilling. I picture myself in a pack of autos, racing down the track, the Top Gear cameras filming it all. There's nothing else like it!

There are lots of great things I like about big block engines. One of the main draws, of course, is the sound and the power. I confess that I am a normal guy in this respect. I love the growl of large block Chevy engines more than almost any other sound. It is music to my ears when the engine roars, the tires squeal, and the car takes off down the strip at a high rate of speed. Nevertheless, there are a lot of other awesome things about a big block motors as well.

For one thing, they are much easier to work on than newer engines. Now days, the trend is toward high-tech, computer-controlled automobiles. That's why I love old large block engine autos. You can truly get under the hood and see what is inside. Another great thing about large block engines is that they are less expensive to work with than you may think. Once you learn how to fix your own car, it is amazing what you are able to build. You can buy an old broken large block crate motor and rebuild it from scratch for very little. Essentially, as long as the engine block is not cracked, you can probably fix it. It gives you a feeling of triumph to be able to fine-tune your own vehicle. Most of us are so out of touch with the tech that we use every day, that it is refreshing to at least understand how our transportation works.
