Teenage Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Coping Skills And Alcohol Abuse, And The Need For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol dependency experts assert that liquor, wine, and beer ads generated by the media are a major reason for the expansion of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol dependency experts affirm that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and convenience of beer, liquor, and wine in our society. Still other substance abuse specialists emphasize the point that more than a few of our young people get involved in alcohol abuse because of the increased apprehension that they are subjected to.
From a somewhat different point of view, since both parents in quite a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance surely has to play a significant role in the escalation of teenage alcohol abuse. And last of all, diverse alcohol dependency professionals affirm that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due, in some degree, to our "anything goes" society.
One facet of youth alcohol abuse that looks as if it somewhat incomplete in the alcohol addiction research results, on the other hand, is the lack of educational courses that teach adolescents how to upgrade their coping skills so that their excessive and careless drinking behavior is fundamentally lessened or eradicated. More explicitly, science has demonstrated that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and careless and abusive drinking.
Basically, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the greater the rate of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a truthful argument, why isn't coping skills training a major part of the educational curriculum in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?
Let us manufacture a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to develop solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets complicated, students who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more creative way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to implement their coping skills.
Stated differently, students who show evidence of outstanding coping skills will be more able to think proactively and show signs of top quality decision making as opposed to teens were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop top quality coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, what's more, if young people not only received exceptional coping skills instruction but also obtained an excellent education that underscored the short term and long term negative outcomes associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is advocated, would help teenagers keep away from the apparent charm associated with adolescent drinking and, for that reason, would substantially diminish the destructive drinking behavior displayed by adolescents in our country.
There are indubitably many valid reasons why so many of our teens drink in a harmful manner. Such a complicated predicament demands a far-reaching and more applicable response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our youth can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more productive and accountable manner rather than gravitating to careless and excessive drinking to solve their difficulties.
