Work was becoming too chaotic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Although he had only been on the police force for three-and-a-half years, he already had a reputation as an extremely hard worker who rarely said no to working overtime. In actual fact, he was now working ten to fifteen hours of overtime each week and, as a consequence, he felt like he was losing his grip on his personal life. What made the circumstances more complicated, nevertheless, was the fact that Lonnie began going out drinking with a group of fellow officers after work.

Apparently Lonnie was in a health related and emotional rut and going through some adverse signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie really experienced drinking related problems and alcoholism signs, however, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn't really a nag, however she regularly encouraged him to stay at home more with her and with the children instead of going out and wasting money while drinking with his buddies.

When he was really honest with himself, it was clear to Lonnie that his careless drinking was adversely affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. So one Monday afternoon Lonnie got energized and came to a decision to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.

Lonnie told Richard how careless and irresponsible drinking was negatively affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. Richard mentioned to Lonnie that he totally understood because roughly fourteen years ago, he too involved himself with abusive and irresponsible drinking. Indeed, Richard mentioned to Lonnie that careless and irresponsible drinking can cause so many difficulties in an individual's life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And finally, Richard recommended that Lonnie make an appointment with an alcohol counselor at the work-affiliated alcohol and drug abuse rehabilitation facility.

Due to the fact that his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this rehabilitation center, it was not only very affordable but also quite convenient to seek rehab about his abusive and irresponsible drinking. And due to the fact that the personnel at the drug and alcohol treatment center was non-judgmental, supportive, and competent, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on.

After talking to his therapist about how his drinking was adversely affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health, Lonnie grasped the fact that he was burning the candle at both ends with his hectic work hours and his careless and irresponsible drinking. Once he comprehended that he was getting himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the assistance of his psychiatrist, and after thirteen weeks in rehabilitation, he was at long last able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.

The result was that Lonnie saw life another way now that he was in alcohol recovery and learned about alcoholism facts. More to the point, due to his alcohol rehabilitation he not only was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, but he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, he had more quality time to spend with his family, and he felt better and more healthy. As luck would have it, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
